Ellen Nielsen graduated cum laude with a BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008. She received her MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011.

Ellen was trained in theatrical prop fabrication as an intern at CENTERSTAGE Theater in Baltimore from 2008-2009. She was a member of the Annex Theater from 2008-2012, designing and fabricating sets, props, and costumes for numerous productions. She produced and directed a full-scale puppet musical of Harry Nilsson’s album The Point! in 2009.

Ellen worked as a freelance fabricator in Chicago for almost a decade, with clients including Sarah Squirm, Lark Lyra Lou Hill, Johalla Projects, and The Ace Hotel. As a set dresser and draper working in Hollywood, Ellen became a member of IATSE Local 44 in 2018.

Ellen has exhibited her work across a wide DIY space-to-museum spectrum, at venues including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, ACRE in Chicago, Artist’s Television Access in San Francisco, MIX NYC, Current Space Baltimore, Envoy Enterprises NYC, and more. She has been an artist-in-residence at Vermont Studio Center, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Salmon Creek Arts, ACRE, and Oxbow.

Through sculpture, textile, performance, photo, and video, Ellen’s work explores feminized labor, craft, and artificial nature. Her projects are characterized by meticulous technique, absurd humor, and surreal visual transformations.
